Nestor Team Treks SAS Trail

In June, a team sponsored by Nestor recently completed one of the UK’s toughest organised treks – an SAS training trail over the Brecon Beacons covering 54 miles in under 24 hours and raising over £4,000 for the brain injury charity, The Silverlining. Organised by TrekFest, the challenge pushes trekkers to their limits making it one of the UK’s best-sponsored charity walks.

“It was an honour to support The Silverlining and the good work they do for people living with brain injuries. This was as tough a trek as you could find but worth every step for The Silverlining. The weather and the terrain were horrendous, including crossing the highest peaks in South Wales such as the 886 metres, Pen y Fan.” Nick Leech Managing Director, Nestor entered a seven-strong team for TrekFest 2014, described by organisers as “tough as old boots”. The team comprised three from Nestor including Nick Leech, Peter Rhodes and Marcus Pilkington, plus Paul Simpson, Dave Corlett (Woodhouse Garages), Jim Kelly (Alliance Moulding Services) and ex-professional boxer Derek Wormald.

Leech, Corlett and Wormald finished before 05.00am Sunday from a 09.10am start on Saturday, coming in the top 20 out of 200 participants. Rhodes and Pilkington came in the top 50. 500 participated in the shorter 29-mile/12-hour challenge.

He added: “We stuck it out as a team making sure that everyone was at each checkpoint before we moved to the next – nobody was alone at any point to ensure safety. It was tricky out there! Our fittest team member, Derek Wormald, an ex-pro boxer, British & European title contender who regularly does triathlons, iron man and random challenges, said it was one of the hardest physical and mental tests he’s ever gone through.” The Silverlining’s mission is ‘lighting-up lives’ by improving the quality of life of all those affected by brain injury, often through helping them participate in challenges and activities that engage them in the wider community, help them rediscover a sense of purpose and add meaning to their lives. Over the past few years, Nestor teams have taken on the National Three Peaks, the Mary Towneley Loop, Tough Mudder, End-to-End Isle of Man Mountain Bike Challenge, Yorkshire Three Peaks and other individual challenges.
